Children and the Media: Exploring Their Rights from a French–Australian Perspective
How should children’s rights as media users shape regulation and safety?
Prof Elizabeth Handlsey will explore how a children’s rights approach—based on the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of the Child—differs from the dominant legal framework in Australia when it comes to media regulation. Using examples from both
Australia and abroad, she will highlight key issues related to children’s media use and discuss what it means to place children at the
centre of decision-making.
Colin MacDougall, Emeritus Professor of Public Health at Flinders University and SA Hub Leader for AFRAN, will open the
session with a brief summary of the recent French-Australian research meeting on “Children and Screens,” held on June 30 and organised in
partnership with the Embassy of France.

They are organised in partnership with AFRAN (Australian-French Association for
Research and Innovation), a network that fosters collaboration between French and Australian researchers, innovators, and science
