A Closer Look To The Alliance Francaise French Film Festival 2023

Festival Artistic Director Karine Mauris said, “Our 2023 edition is bursting with effervescence as it tells tales of resilience and limitless hope”. It looks like a promising year, doesn't it?

The world’s largest showcase of French cinema outside of France returns to Australia this month. Alliance Française launched its film festival in the Aussie country in 1989. Since then, it has grown into the largest festival dedicated to contemporary French films outside of France and one of the largest public events in Australia with more than 152,000 attendances in 2022.

Present in several Australian cities, the Alliance Française French Film Festival will of course be in Adelaide! You will be able to watch the movies at Nova East End and Prospect from 23 March to 19 April, as well as in other regional cities’ cinemas.

The spirit of this year's edition

French films are known for their sophistication, artistry, and unique storytelling, and the festival offers a diverse selection of films to suit all tastes. This edition would even be the “most eclectic line-up to date of the best contemporary French cinema”, according to Ms Mauris. “The 2023 program offers something for everyone, whether it be the hilarity of a meta-zombie comedy, tragic journeys with gripping consequences or adventures of l’Amour in all its forms”.

This year, major French actors will share the bill. Women are also in the spotlight: “the leading ladies of French entertainment take centre stage, with mesmerizing performances from Juliette Binoche, Marion Cotillard, Virginie Efira and Léa Seyoux, not to mention Call My Agent! favourite Laure Calamy”.

Attending the festival can greatly give you a deeper understanding of current French culture. Especially since “alongside this year’s biggest French box office successes, the AF FFF 23 will also offer the opportunity to discover a new school of emerging French talent”. These include “newcomer Paul Kircher’s performance in Winter Boy, Céline Devaux’s directorial debut in the wickedly funny Everybody Loves Jeanne and the 2023 Academy Awards contender for Best International Feature (France) Saint Omer from Alice Diop featuring rising star Kayije Kagame”.

France-Australia cultural links

That is true to say that the festival is a platform for French filmmakers to showcase their work to an international audience, but it also aims to strengthen cultural ties between France and Australia. In this idea, multiple award-winning filmmaker Scott Hicks will once again do us the pleasure of being the South Australian Ambassador for the Festival to celebrate and discuss the profound impact of French cinema on his own career and filmmaking more broadly.

Whether you are a seasoned film buff or simply curious about French cinema, the Alliance Française French Film Festival is a must-see event. So why not experience the magic of French cinema for yourself?
