About Us

The Alliance Française d’Adélaïde is an Australian not-for-profit association dedicated to the promotion of the French language and culture. It celebrated 110 years of operation in 2020.

The Alliance offers a wide range of French classes for all ages (children, high school students and adults) and all levels. You will find all sorts of courses adapted to your needs, availability and objectives. Our classes are conducted by experienced and qualified French teachers.

The Alliance is also a vibrant cultural centre and organises each year major cultural events and activities such as the French Film Festival, the French Market, cine-clubs, concerts, book launches and many other events.

The Alliance is accredited by the Ethnic Schools Board of South Australia and by the SACE Board of South Australia; it is the official examination centre for the DELF examinations (run by the French Ministry of Education) in Adelaide.

The Alliance Française Network

The Fondation Alliance Française coordinates an international network of 819 Alliances set up in 137 countries. This network reaches over 550,000 people all over the globe.

For over a century, the Alliance Française has been overseeing an ambitious project: to spread French language and culture well beyond the borders of France.

The Alliance Française was founded in 1883 in Paris as “Association nationale pour la propagation de la langue française dans les colonies et à l’étranger” (National association for the propagation of the French language in French territories and abroad) under the aegis of Pierre Foncin and Ambassador Paul Cambon. The Paris Alliance was created the following year by a board of directors featuring illustrious names like Jules Verne (author), Louis Pasteur (chemist and biologist), and Ferdinand de Lesseps (diplomat). The first Alliance Française abroad was created the same year in Barcelona, Spain.

Faithful to the values of its founders, the Alliance Française remains committed to the formula of an association.

Each Alliance is part of this worldwide network but has forged strong bonds with its local cultural, educational and business communities.

Our values

No matter where we come from, everyone's history and reasons for learning French are valid here at the Alliance Francaise.

Promoting cultural exchanges and diversity is an important part of all our courses.

People are able to come together thanks to the French language. More than a course, we offer our learners a whole world of French!

Our ambition is to create an environment that is supportive of the beliefs and culture of each learner.
