Basic user A1 - "Breakthrough

French courses for basic users

Alliance teachers speak French as a native language and use a communicative method of language learning in supportive classroom environments. Students will follow the 'Campus 1' French-as-a-foreign-language method. With its focus on developing communicative competence, the textbook offers students lots of opportunities to speak along with a reasonable approach to grammar. It follows the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

How to determine your level?

If you are new to the Alliance but not a complete beginner, you will need to sit for a language assessment, consisting of a short written evaluation followed by an informal conversation. This short test does not require preparation and is held free of charge, preferably by appointment on 8272 4281.

The "A1 Breakthrough" level covers 0 to 80 hours of French and is divided into 4 sub-levels.

  • Level 1: Designed for absolute beginners, the emphasis is on very basic conversational skills. You'll make up basic sentences and learn how to use available tools and resources.
  • Level 2: Broaden your conversational skills: talk about your interests, profession and country. For effective language learning, you will develop your skills in "how to learn' techniques.
  • Level 3: You'll learn how to make, accept and refuse suggestions, ask about and give directions, as well as give information about your activities (date, time, place).
  • Level 4: You'll start to talk about past activities and daily life in France: shopping, food, etc. Using expressions of quantity, you'll buy/order food and beverages and express your delight.

The classes are held at different moment of the day (morning, afternoon or evening) to suit everyone wanting to learn French. Once-a-week classes are perfect for busy people, while twice-a-week classes are especially designed for those students wanting to progress quickly (with 40 hours a term) allowing students to become more deeply immersed in the language.

What you need to know before you start French.

Note: Enrolment in a course implies acceptance of the Alliance Française's terms and conditions.
