Nice

Nice, city of the Riviera - Côte d'Azur.
From the Mediterranean seaside to the very peaks of the maritime Alps, the Riviera reveals its countless attractions in every season: Nice, with its old city and the Promenade des Anglais, Menton and its baroque architectural heritage, the elegant resort towns of Cannes and Monte-Carlo, the fields of flowers in the Grasse area, hilltop villages in the back country, such as Gourdon and Saint-Paul, prestigious museums such as the Picasso Museum in Antibes, the Chagall Museum in Nice ... There is also a wide variety of arts and crafts; sports, ranging from golf to deep-sea diving to climbing and caving, to skiing in the winter... All year long, a parade of events makes the Riviera a life-size stage, the biggest in the world. International festivals such as the International Cannes Film Festival, the Carnival of Nice, and traditional celebrations draw enthusiastic followers. Enjoy the Riviera in all 4 seasons, enjoy a thousand sensations. The Alliance Française de Nice urges you to combine your holiday in this marvellous region with your studies.

To see in Nice:

  • Promenade des Anglais: pristine facades, palm trees and blue skies… the seaside walkway is really exotic. It's really popular with joggers, rollerbladers and pedestrians. The grand Hôtel Negresco, with its elegant Salon Louis XIV and Salon Royal, is the most famous building on the promenade.
  • Vieux Nice: Nice's old town is a delightful mish-mash of winding streets, lively squares and Genoese, Provençal, medieval and baroque architecture, as well as being famous for its nightlife. The Parc du Château overlooks the old town.
  • Cimiez: this residential suburb is just north of the city centre. The ruined remains of the ancient city of Cemenelum pose as a reminder its Roman past. A 16th-century monastery affords superb views of the bay and displays some fabulous works of art.
  • Musée Matisse: the museum's collection spans the artist's long and productive life, capturing all his creative phases. Matisse wintered in Nice until his death.
