Lyon
Third city of France, Lyon is the region’s capital and a city of lights. It dates back 20 centuries to the Gallo-Roman site of Fourvière. The renaissance comes back to life as the visitor explores the streets and squares of Old Lyon. Lyon, now registered on the world heritage list of UNESCO, has joined such prestigious cities as Venice, Prague or Saint-Petersburg. Close to the Alps, Lyon is an excellent destination for those who enjoy mountains, but Lyon is also less than 3 hours from Paris by the TGV train! The Alliance Française de Lyon is a very active association welcoming students from all over the world. Its Director knows Australia very well as he was the Director of the Alliance Française in Melbourne (1993-1999), it will be a delight to welcome you here...

To see in Lyon :
- Fourvière : from the top of Fourvière, called the hill that prays-because of the numerous religious congregations that it harbors and its marvellous basilica you can see the entire city.
- Quartier de Saint-Jean : on the banks of the Saône, the Saint Jean quarter, also called the "old Lyon", presents the town in its renaissance, 15th and 16th centuries aspect , with its narrow, little, pedestrian streets , its "bouchons", the typical Lyon restaurants, its ochre coloured houses… In 1998 UNESCO declared the old Lyon world heritage.
- Presqu'île : this is the heart of Lyon, between the Rhône and the Saône. It is the place to be as far as high-style shops, restaurants and department stores are concerned. The Place Bellecour; an immense red square is a place to stroll; to meet, or to listen to concerts beneath the scornful stare of Louis XIV turned to stone on his motionless horse.
- Croix Rousse: the little hill of the Croix Rousse is the old quarter of the silk workers, the "canuts". Tall, high, majestic, highly coloured buildings, dating from the 18th century form a labyrinth of streets as far as the plateau, a little town centre.
- Quartier de la Part-Dieu: it is the biggest shopping centre in Europe.
- Parc de la Tête d'Or: it is a huge park in the centre of the city.
